JACK HIRSCHMAN

I’ve always loved philosophy but I’m not a philosopher, ideas though I’m not an intellectual. Nor is it because I’m a lover of form that I’m a poet. No, the truth is : I love beginning where nothing is.

Language, that house of Being, is where Beginning is most fecund when it con-centrates itself, because in that fertile reception of voice through the magical transformation of the nothingness of the death of the moment, the truth of being human begins. Then indeed I also begin to be an intellectual and a philosopher and a painter and musician too. For it is poetry that grounds them all, the poem that listens and sees far and near, whose interplay of word/sound and silences arrives at that depth of expression that in effect says, « not I but the word that blows through me »---to quote the great poet of Great Britain in the last century, D.H. Lawrence.

Lawrence)。

For we live today in a time when war is said to be peace through the governance of lies, where we’re obliged to be forever against the depths in ourselves through our participation in the consumerism that both satisfies and utterly alienates, banalizes and resigns our souls to a world of things that darkens our beings amid the glitter of neon and advertisement, the relentless consumption of ourselves in a violence-driven, competitive and hedonistic brothel in which narcissistically we sell ourselves over and over without an end in sight.

If a poem is really a poem, it challanges the reality I’ve just described. It has to, in order to breathe. I fiercely disagree with W.H. Auden, who wrote, « A poem does nothing, it survives. »  A poem begins receiving the world anew and in that beginning is its defiance, in that defiance its hope, and that hope is ruled by the light of that « not I » that allows the poem to be thrown far forward as a beacon from the moment of Now to the possibility of what has just now begun to unfold but which has already summoned  the poet to be the voice underlying that reception and that leap.

It was in the course of my growth as a poet, as a communist as a poet, I realized that a poem could be the most profound and powerful beacon for revolution, and most of the past 40 years I have dedicated myself to working with and organizing other poets, translating their works from nine languages, to further the communist revolution, with the formation, with others, of the Union of Left Writers (1983-89), the Revolutionary Poets Brigade (2009—present) and the World Poetry Movement (2011---present). As the  Poet Laureate of the City of San Francisco (2006-2009), I formed citywide readings of the poets  in all 11 districts of the city, which contunue to this day, entitled Poets 11.

In each of these organizing projects, anthologies have been published : for the Union of Left Writers. 22 issues of Compages, a journal of translations (with original lang-uages from all over the world) of revolutional poetry ; Poets 11 ( five anthologies of 33 poets each---3 from each district in the city---) published in the last decade ; and anthologies of the Revolutionary Poets Brigade, including 3 entitled Overthrowing Capitalism---with international poets included---published by the Kallatumba Press, the Press of the RPB, which has also published the poems  of Jid Majia, translated by Denis Mair, From the Snow Leopard to Vladimir Mayakovsky.
